Published Pre-Columbian Chimu textile tunic from Peru, ca. 1000-1400 CE. The sleeveless shirt is decorated with figurative birds which were commonly depicted in this period. The stylized zoomorphic motif is a geometric representation that appears since the Moche culture; sometimes it can be clearly identified as serpents and at others, the features are very difficult to recognize. Very rare to find a complete example as nice as this one which is also published. A picture of the shirt can be seen in the book "Weaving for the Afterlife" Peruvian textiles from the Maiman collection, page 260.
Provenance: "Haifa Museum of Art", Acquired by the Maiman Group following a 1988 exhibition and the closure of the ethnology department of the museum. Estate of Yossef Maiman.
