Important & Rare Chavin stone mortar from Peru, ca. 900-400 BCE. A finely carved example depicting a figure holding a mortar and pestle in hand. Interestingly enough the piece is depicted with one leg and one hand in a deformed position. The navel appears pushed out most likely trying to depict a hernia. The piece is decorated with incised decorations, and red cinnabar rubbed into the grooves of the piece. These small pieces were likely made for ceremonial purposes. Small portion of left foot was reattached with break lines visible, otherwise intact and in excellent condition. Traces of root marks, mineral and soil deposits present attesting to its age. A truly special piece. 3 7/8" in height.
