A Pre-Columbian Colima pottery dog from ancient West Mexico, dating to the Late Preclassic to Early Classic period (circa 300 BCE to 300 CE). This dog is crafted from reddish-brown terracotta with a burnished surface that creates a smooth, glossy finish, characteristic of Colima ceramics.
The sculpture depicts a stylized dog standing on all four legs, with a rounded, compact body and a raised tail that curves slightly upward. The head of the dog is elongated, with erect, pointed ears and a snout that shows simple incised lines to denote the mouth and facial features. The eyes are almond-shaped, giving the dog an alert and lively expression. The body is plump and slightly rounded, capturing the characteristic traits of the hairless Mexican dog, or Xoloitzcuintli, which was often depicted in Colima pottery.
The figure's surface shows signs of wear and age, with areas of darker patina and subtle abrasions, suggesting it has been exposed to the elements or handled over time. This type of dog sculpture was often placed in shaft tombs and is believed to have held spiritual significance, possibly serving as a companion for the deceased in the afterlife or representing themes of protection, guidance, and fertility. 12.25" in length.
