Pre-Columbian Maya painted pottery vase from Guatemala, ca. 600-900 CE. Black painted vase which represents the underworld, depicting the bat god Camazotz in three oval panels. Camazotz is a bat spirit at the service of the lords of the underworld. A band of matt symbols and geometric patterns on the upper band. A nice example! restored from several pieces with restoration over the break lines. Ample manganese deposits all over the surface attesting to its age. 7 9/16" in height x 5 3/4" in diameter. Ex Mark Clark collection, San Francisco, CA.
