Important Teotihuacan serpentine mask from Mexico, ca. 450-650 CE. Idealized human faces were commonly shown on masks and face panels from Teotihuacán. Historically, these masks were attached to mummy bundles or effigies.  It depicts a face with sculpted parted lips, wide oval eyes, and decoratively carved ears showing earspools not commonly seen with most Teotihuacan masks which have tab-like ears. The mask also has two carved linear patterns running across the face and left side, making this a scarce type. Carved from a rich green colored serpentine. A fine example! 4 3/4" x 5.3/4"
