The Pre-Columbian Chavín Marañón Snake Vessel is an exceptional ceramic artifact, dating to the Early Horizon period (900–200 BCE), showcasing the intricate artistry and symbolic depth of Chavín culture. This vessel features a coiled snake body, painted with alternating red and cream-colored bands that emphasize the serpent's sinuous form. The vessel's spout emerges from the top, seamlessly integrated into the coiled structure, demonstrating sophisticated craftsmanship.

A stylized serpent head adorns the vessel, featuring geometric detailing such as angular fangs, protruding eyes, and patterned motifs, representing the Chavín cultural emphasis on spiritual and mythological iconography. The snake, often associated with transformation and fertility in Andean symbolism, conveys the importance of the animal in ceremonial and ritual contexts.

The polished terracotta surface, with its vibrant earth-tone colors, enhances the vessel’s visual impact, while its utilitarian design suggests it was likely used in ceremonial libations or other ritualistic practices. This vessel exemplifies the Chavín culture’s mastery of form, function, and symbolism, reflecting the profound religious and artistic traditions of early Andean civilizations. 8" in height. Restored from over a dozen pieces with restoration over the break lines. A section below the eye was replaced, and tip of spout, paint touch ups to the white areas around the eyes.
