Moche stirrup vessel, crafted during the Early Intermediate Period (100–700 CE), represents a kneeling warrior in full ceremonial regalia. The figure is intricately sculpted, with remarkable attention to detail in the facial expression, clothing, and weaponry. The warrior wears an elaborate headdress adorned with animal motifs, possibly symbolizing divine or mythological protection, and his tunic features painted geometric designs indicative of high status. He holds a ceremonial club in one hand, emphasizing his role as a defender or leader within the Moche hierarchy.

The vessel exhibits the hallmark craftsmanship of Moche ceramics, with a smooth burnished finish and a natural color palette of reddish-brown, cream, and black pigments applied using a fine slip. The stirrup spout at the back enhances the functionality of the piece while maintaining its sculptural elegance. Such vessels were often used in ceremonial or funerary contexts, reflecting the Moche culture’s focus on ritual, warfare, and power. 8 3/8" in height. Ex. Private Florida collection, 1970's.

Several areas of paint touch-ups. The two hands on the headdress, tip of the mace head restored. The spout reattached with restoration over the break lines, otherwise intact.
