Rendered in a seated posture with legs splayed and hands resting upon the abdomen, the figure displays broad Olmecoid facial features, pierced ear spools, an elaborate cranial coiffure, and a necklace with a circular pendant. The restrained modeling and balanced proportions exemplify the sculptural traditions that flourished during a formative period in southeastern Mesoamerica, when Olmec artistic conventions merged with emerging Proto-Maya cultural expressions. Figures of this type are believed to have represented revered ancestors, elite individuals, or participants in ritual activity, reflecting the increasing social and religious complexity of Late Preclassic society.

The present example is distinguished by its expressive sculptural quality and excellent state of preservation. The surface retains an attractive light buff slip with scattered traces of mineral deposits and age-related wear consistent with long burial, while the carefully modeled facial features, ornaments, and body details remain remarkably crisp. Works from Chalchuapa are among the most significant ceramic sculptures of the Preclassic period and provide important insight into the artistic and ideological foundations from which the Classic Maya civilization would later emerge.

Dimensions: 7”

Provenance: Ex.
