Maya Plate

Maya Plate

Pre-Columbian Maya Plate from Yucatan, Mexico, ca. 600-900 A.D. Nice painted plate with central figure and three seated figures wearing kilts are evenly spaced around the rim, and all three are framed with large, outlined mammiforms. The fields between the figures are is filled with small, scalelike shapes that give texture and color in contrast to the plain central field. The outlines were quickly applied by the sure hand of a skilled painter, in an expressive calligraphic line. Custom metal stand included.

14-3/16′ in diameter.

Repaired from several pieces with restoration over the break lines.
