This ancient pottery jar was made during the Machang Phase, ca, 2200-2000 BCE. The Majiayao culture which flourished around 4,000 years ago in present-day Gansu or Qinghai province. The pottery is a pale orange-brown color and has been highly fired, giving it a sturdy and durable quality. It has a well-rounded body, two loop handles, and a flared mouth. The upper body has been adorned with geometric patterns created using a dark brown fired-on mineral-based pigment, and the inner mouth has been similarly decorated. This jar was likely used for storing and carrying liquids such as water or other beverages." 10 1/4" in height.
