This exceptional Pre-Columbian stirrup-spout vessel, attributed to the Moche II period (100–300 CE), features a finely sculpted depiction of a Canan lizard, a creature revered in Moche culture for its symbolic and ecological significance. The lizard is intricately modeled in high relief, wrapped around the rounded body of the vessel, with detailed anatomical features including its textured skin, prominent eye, and sharp teeth. The piece showcases the Moche artisans’ mastery of realism and their deep connection to the natural world.

Crafted from reddish-brown ceramic, the surface of the vessel has been polished to a smooth finish, enhancing its subtle naturalistic details. The stirrup spout, a hallmark of Moche pottery, is both functional and aesthetically integrated into the design. This vessel likely held ceremonial significance, symbolizing adaptability, fertility, or the spiritual essence of the lizard. 7 1/2" in height. Private Florida collection, 1970's.
