This exceptional Pre-Columbian Moche IV pottery vessel, crafted during the Early Intermediate Period (500–700 CE), is a remarkable example of the Moche culture’s naturalistic ceramic tradition. Modeled in the form of a young man’s head, the vessel captures lifelike anatomical details with a sense of individuality and realism. The figure features expressive almond-shaped eyes, a prominent nose, full lips, and well-defined ears, with a neat, incised haircut framing the face. These features suggest the vessel may represent a specific individual of importance, possibly an elite or ceremonial figure.

The smooth terracotta surface, enhanced by a natural burnish, highlights the craftsmanship of Moche artisans. Such vessels were often used in ceremonial or funerary contexts, serving as ritual offerings or symbolic representations of individuals, ancestors, or deities. The lifelike portrayal is a testament to the Moche culture's mastery of realism and their focus on personal and spiritual connections.. 6" in height. H. Marshall Goodman, Richmond, VA.
