Pre-Columbian Recuay whistling vessel, dating to the Early Intermediate Period (200–600 CE), is an extraordinary example of Recuay artistry and ceremonial ingenuity. The dual-chambered vessel features intricate polychrome decoration and sculptural elements. One chamber is adorned with a striking anthropomorphic jaguar face motif, rendered with vibrant red, black, and cream pigments over a smooth kaolin slip. The other chamber is topped with a fully sculpted jaguar figure, depicted in a dynamic and expressive pose, reflecting the Recuay culture’s reverence for this powerful predator as a symbol of strength and protection. Designed to produce a whistling sound when air or liquid flows through its chambers, this vessel served both as a functional object and a ceremonial artifact, likely used in rituals or as an offering. The jaguar motifs, with their sharp teeth and bold geometric details, emphasize the vessel's connection to Recuay mythology and its symbolic association with spiritual power and the natural world. Ex. Private Florida collection, 1970's. 5 1/4" in length x 5 5/8" in height.
