This exquisite Paracas polychrome pottery bowl, dating to the Early Horizon Period (400–200 BCE), is a masterful example of ancient Andean craftsmanship. The bowl’s exterior is adorned with a vividly rendered parrot motif, showcasing the Paracas culture’s fascination with vibrant avian imagery. The parrot, depicted in profile with a sharp beak, bold circular eye, and elegantly curved wings, is painted in a striking polychrome palette of deep red, green, cream, and yellow, outlined with fine white lines to emphasize its geometric abstraction.
The bowl’s compact size, measuring 3 7/8 inches in diameter and 2 1/4 inches in height, suggests it was likely used for ceremonial or ritual purposes. The vessel’s surface is polished to a smooth finish, highlighting the intricate painted details and the symbolic significance of the parrot, which may have represented fertility, communication, or spiritual connections in Paracas cosmology.3 7/8" in diameter x 2 1/4" in height. Ex. Private Florida collection, 1970's.
