A fine and important Pre-Columbian Recuay Kaolin feline bottle, originating from the Recuay culture of the highlands of northern Peru, which flourished between 200 CE and 700 CE. This unique ceramic vessel is crafted in the shape of a stylized feline, a motif commonly associated with power, protection, and spiritual significance in Andean cultures. The bottle is made from terracotta and decorated with a creamy white slip, over which bold black and red geometric and circular patterns have been meticulously painted. The feline is portrayed in a crouched position, with its body serving as the primary form of the vessel. The head, with its large, round eyes, alert ears, and pronounced, open mouth, creates a dynamic, expressive visage that adds character to the piece. The mouth is painted with thick black lines to emphasize its open, almost snarling expression, suggesting aggression or vigilance, which may reflect the creature’s role as a protective entity.

The body of the bottle is covered with intricate patterns of concentric circles, squares, and dotted designs, all meticulously painted to create a striking contrast against the light background. These designs may symbolize the animal’s fur or carry specific cultural or symbolic meanings tied to Recuay iconography. The vessel has a flared spout extending from the back, which was likely used for pouring liquids, indicating a functional as well as a ceremonial purpose.

The surface of the vessel is polished, and its form exhibits a high level of craftsmanship, suggesting it may have been used in important rituals or as a status symbol. The detailing and artistic style of the bottle are typical of Recuay ceramics, which are renowned for their complex painted patterns, three-dimensional forms, and zoomorphic representations. This piece is an excellent example of Recuay artistry and reflects the cultural significance of animal symbolism in Pre-Columbian Andean societies. 5 1/2" in height x 5 1/2" in length.
