This scarce Pre-Columbian Maya pottery figure from Guatemala is a striking example of ancient ceramic artistry. The figure is seated or kneeling, with an expressive face that features high cheekbones, a prominent nose, and a solemn, almost meditative expression. Its arms are bent at the elbows, with hands held near the chest, suggesting a gesture of reverence, power, or ritual significance. The body is detailed with sculpted jewelry, including large circular ear spools and an ornate beaded necklace, which emphasize the figure’s elite status.
One of the most captivating elements of this artifact is its elaborate headdress, which rises dramatically above the head, adorned with intricate patterns and crowned by what appears to be a jaguar face with paws as if ready to pounce. The presence of a secondary figure or spirit-like entity within the headdress suggests a connection to the divine or ancestral lineage, a common theme in Maya iconography. The figure’s attire, including a tunic-like garment with engraved and painted details, further enhances its regal or ceremonial presence.
The pottery is a rich, warm reddish-brown, characteristic of Maya ceramics from the Tiquisaste region. What makes this particular piece exceptionally rare is the use of black painted details, which highlight facial features, jewelry, and clothing patterns, adding a layer of depth and contrast to the sculpture. These painted elements are uncommon in surviving Maya pottery, making this a truly unique example.
From the back, the figure reveals a carefully placed hole in the upper section, possibly serving a functional purpose in ritual practices. This hole could have been used for incense burning, offerings, or attachment to a larger structure. The curvature of the back, along with the exaggerated proportions of the shoulders and headdress, suggests that this was a ceremonial object, possibly associated with burial rites or religious observances.
This rare Maya artifact is a testament to the sophistication and spiritual depth of ancient Mesoamerican culture. Its artistic refinement, symbolic richness, and well-preserved state make it an extraordinary representation of the Pre-Columbian era. A large example measuring 15" in height. Ex. K. Gregory collection, Ex. L. Merida collection, acquired prior to 1970. All painted details are original to the figure. One repaired crack at the back otherwise in excellent condition.
