Published Pre-Columbian Chancay Textile head for mummy bundle from Peru, ca. 1000-1200 CE. In Chancay culture, mummies were wrapped in a seated position using yards of cloth to create a bundle. To complete the bundle, a false head was added, typically made from woven cotton and painted with eyes and a mouth. These false heads could also be sculpted from wood or hammered and chased from precious metals like gold, silver, and copper. Some false heads were even made from sack-like textile covers filled with raw cotton and straw, like this one which were then painted or adorned with decorative elements like shell discs, feathers, and real hair. Textile headscarves and ribbons were also commonly added to these false heads for added adornment. This piece is mounted on a custom wooden base. Published on page 135 of the book "Woman of Ancient America in cult and everyday life". 24-1/2" in height, making it larger than most examples.
