This exquisite Pre-Columbian Maya necklace is composed of polished jade beads, gradually increasing in size toward a central pendant carved with a bold anthropomorphic face. The facial features—wide eyes, prominent nose, and pronounced lips—reflect classic Maya artistry, embodying both spiritual significance and elite status. The beads display varying shades of green and subtle translucency, hallmarks of high-quality jade highly prized in ancient Mesoamerica.
On the reverse, the central pendant presents a smooth rectangular jade plaque with drilled perforations, likely for ritual suspension or attachment. Such necklaces were worn by Maya nobility during ceremonial events and may have served as symbols of divine power or lineage. Previously offered through Sotheby’s, this piece is an outstanding example of Maya lapidary work, preserved in excellent condition with rich cultural and historical resonance. 26" in length, central pendant measures 1 3/8" x 1 1/4"
