Pre-Columbian Maya Jaina Island Mold-Made Pottery Figure
Maya Civilization, Late Classic Period, ca. 600–900 CE
A finely crafted mold-made terracotta figure from the island of Jaina, a ceremonial center off the coast of Campeche, Mexico, celebrated for its exceptional funerary figurines. This example depicts an elaborately adorned individual—possibly an elite woman or priestess—dressed in layered garments and ornate jewelry, including earspools, beaded necklaces, and a complex headdress with avian elements. Her hands are gracefully joined at the front, holding ceremonial strands or adornments.
This piece is comparable to an example in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), viewable at: LACMA Collection Link.
