This extraordinary Pre-Columbian Chavín-Marañón pottery vessel, dating to the Early Horizon Period (900–200 BCE), is a unique and significant artifact, shaped in the form of a conch shell. Conch shells held deep symbolic meaning in Andean cultures, often associated with water, fertility, and spiritual rituals, making this vessel an exceptional representation of Chavín religious and artistic traditions.

The vessel is decorated with intricate geometric patterns incised into the surface, featuring repeating triangles, zigzags, and linear motifs that evoke the Chavín culture's characteristic style. The dark black designs contrast beautifully against the creamy surface, while the red slip accents along the spout, handle, and base add a dynamic touch. The stirrup spout is elegantly integrated into the vessel’s form, reflecting the dual emphasis on functionality and artistry typical of Chavín ceramics. Ex. Private Florida collection, 1970's. 9 1/2" in length x 8 1/4" in height. Some restored breaks to the body, and several areas that have been repainted. TL tested.
