Pre-Columbian Nazca kero, dating from 200–600 CE, demonstrates the artistic excellence of the ancient Nazca civilization. Crafted from fine terracotta, this vessel is decorated with meticulously painted geometric and polychromatic bands in shades of red, orange, cream, and black. The alternating patterns include horizontal stripes and circular motifs that lend the piece an elegant and ceremonial appearance. The smooth, rounded base and gently flared upper rim exhibit the craftsmanship typical of the Nazca culture.
The kero's vibrant designs and functional shape suggest its use in ceremonial contexts, possibly for holding chicha or other offerings. The bold painted decorations, including its delicate circles and alternating striped patterns, are emblematic of Nazca artistry and their symbolic representation of life, community, and ritual. Ex. Private Hollywood, Fl. collection, acquired in the 70's. 5 1/2" in height. TL tested by Ralf Kotalla in Germany. Repaired from about 6 pieces with restoration over the break lines, otherwise intact.
