This vibrant Pre-Columbian Nazca polychrome vessel, crafted during the Early Intermediate Period (200–600 CE), exemplifies the Nazca civilization's mastery of ceramic art and its deep connection to marine life. The vessel features a beautifully painted frieze of stylized fish motifs encircling its body, depicted in dynamic poses with bold black outlines, orange accents, and cream detailing. Above this frieze, a decorative band of vertical stripes with dotted embellishments adds to the vessel’s intricate design, showcasing the Nazca's sophisticated use of polychrome decoration. The flaring form and polished surface enhance the visual impact of the colorful patterns, reflecting the symbolic and artistic importance of such vessels in ceremonial or ritual contexts. Marine motifs like the fish depicted here highlight the Nazca’s dependence on coastal resources and their reverence for aquatic life as a spiritual and cultural symbol. 4 1/4" in height x 5 5/8" in diameter. Ex. Private Hollywood, Fl. collection, acquired in the 70's. Repaired from 6 pieces with restoration over the break lines. Several areas of re-painting.
