Ancient Byzantine Mold-Made Oil Lamp with Cross

An authentic Byzantine mold-made terracotta oil lamp from the Holy Land, dating to the early Christian period. The lamp features a rounded body with a large central filling hole, an elongated nozzle, and molded decoration radiating from the filling hole in the form of stylized palm fronds or petals. Prominently molded on the nozzle is a Christian cross, symbolizing the lamp’s religious significance and association with the growing Christian communities of the Byzantine Empire.

Lamps of this type were produced in large numbers throughout Palestine and were commonly purchased by Christian pilgrims visiting Jerusalem and the sacred sites of the Holy Land. Many were taken home as devotional souvenirs, serving as both practical household lamps and cherished reminders of their pilgrimage.

The lamp displays an attractive buff-colored ceramic surface with light earthen deposits and excellent preservation of its molded details. A beautiful and highly collectible example of early Christian material culture, representing the faith and daily life of Byzantine pilgrims nearly 1,500 years ago.
