            Pre-Columbian Maya effigy lidded vessel
Guatemala, probably Kaminaljuyú, Late Preclassic to Early Classic period, ca. 100 B.C.–A.D. 300
A superb Maya effigy lidded vessel, finely modeled as a kneeling individual with arms crossed upon the chest in a gesture symbolizing repose and transformation. The head, forming the removable lid, displays expressive almond-shaped eyes, parted lips, and incised coiffure lines beneath a smooth domed crown, framed by large circular ear ornaments. The cylindrical lower section is decorated with modeled limbs and a front apron panel, all executed in rich red and cream slip with traces of original burnish and mineral deposits from long interment.
Effigy vessels of this form are characteristic of the Guatemalan Highlands, and particularly associated with the site of Kaminaljuyú, where similar examples have been recovered from elite tombs and ritual caches. Such vessels likely functioned as both ceremonial containers and ancestral effigies, embodying the dual concept of offering and divine embodiment central to Maya ritual practice.

Ex. Private Austin, Texas Collection, acquired through family descent; originally collected in the 1960s
