Description

This Ancient Egyptian scarab amulet is carved from glazed steatite and measures approximately 5/8 inch in length. The piece is sculpted in the traditional beetle form associated with Khepri, the solar god of rebirth and renewal. The domed back displays finely modeled wing cases and thorax divisions, still retaining vivid turquoise-green glaze with areas of natural wear and mineral patina acquired through burial and antiquity.

The underside is flat and engraved with a hieroglyphic design arranged in a cartouche-like layout, a common religious format used to invoke protection, regeneration, and divine authority. A longitudinal piercing allows the scarab to be worn as a personal amulet, mounted in jewelry, or incorporated into funerary wrappings in antiquity.

The material, glaze texture, carving style, and wear patterns are fully consistent with authentic Egyptian production from the Late Period, circa 664–332 BCE, when scarabs were widely used both as religious charms and symbols of personal piety.

Provenance:
From the collection of Philip Mitry, one of the most prominent Egyptian antiquities dealers of the mid-20th century. The Mitry collection was exported from Egypt and imported into the United States in 1951, well before modern cultural property and export regulations, establishing this piece’s long-standing and legal presence in an American private collection.
