Pre-Columbian Maya Jaina Pottery Head Fragment with Facial Scarification
An expressive pottery head fragment depicting an individual wearing an elaborate, towering headdress embellished with applied circular and layered ornaments. The carefully modeled face features heavy-lidded eyes, a prominent nose, and closed lips, with intricate curving patterns representing scarification across the cheeks and around the mouth. A large circular ear ornament survives on one side.
The warm reddish-orange pottery displays scattered pale deposits and surface wear. Mounted on a modern black display stand.
Condition: Fragmentary, with losses to the headdress and one ear ornament, chipping, and surface wear.
Provenance: Ex Ararity Auctions, Virginia.
