Maya Stucco Head of a Dignitary, circa 600–900 A.D.
Height: 8 ¼ in. (21 cm)

A powerful Maya stucco head portraying the serene countenance of a high-ranking dignitary, modeled with exceptional refinement and sensitivity. The figure’s softly rounded features—closed eyes, gently curved lips, and aquiline nose—convey an expression of introspection and solemnity. The face is framed by large circular earspools and an elaborate coiffure, the central crest sweeping upward into a layered headdress element.

Remnants of green, red, and cream pigment are preserved on the surface, evoking the original polychrome that once enlivened the figure within a temple or palace setting. Stucco portraiture held a privileged place in Maya art, adorning architecture and sanctuaries with lifelike representations of rulers, nobles, and deities. This head, with its idealized yet individualized features, likely formed part of a larger mural or sculptural program emphasizing dynastic continuity and divine authority.

The present work exemplifies the Maya mastery of stucco, a medium chosen for its ability to capture both delicacy and monumentality. Its intimate scale suggests it may have belonged to a shrine assemblage or been integrated into an architectural frieze. A custom metal hanging bracket has been affixed to the back of the stucco Maya head, secured with recessed screws into a reinforced backing plate. This mount allows the piece to be safely displayed on a wall while minimizing stress to the original surface.
