Description

A finely carved Teotihuacan greenstone mask from Central Mexico, dating to the Classic Period, circa 200–600 AD. Masks of this type are among the most iconic sculptural forms produced by the great city of Teotihuacan, one of the most powerful and influential civilizations of ancient Mesoamerica.

The mask is carved from mottled greenstone and displays the classic Teotihuacan aesthetic: a broad planar face, almond-shaped eyes, a carefully modeled nose, and slightly parted lips. The geometric symmetry and serene expression exemplify the highly stylized artistic conventions associated with Teotihuacan ritual sculpture.

The surface exhibits manganese deposits and earthen mineral encrustations, along with visible ancient tool marks on the cheeks, all consistent with age and long burial. Perforations at the top and sides indicate the mask was likely originally attached to a funerary bundle, ritual figure, or ceremonial offering, a practice commonly associated with Teotihuacan ritual contexts.
