Campanian Red-Figure Bell Krater with Satyr
Magna Graecia, South Italy | Ca. 350–300 BC
An elegant Campanian red-figure bell krater, dating to the 4th century BC and produced in the Greek colonies of southern Italy. The vessel features a broad flaring rim, deep bell-shaped body, twin horizontal handles, and a tall tapering stem terminating in a molded circular foot.
The principal side depicts a nude satyr in animated movement, shown in three-quarter view with one arm raised. The reverse presents a youthful draped figure wearing a himation, standing in profile. Both scenes are framed by elaborate palmettes and vegetal scrolls, with a running wave motif decorating the upper border.
The krater retains an attractive ancient surface with areas of wear, mineral deposits, and losses to the painted decoration consistent with its age.
Provenance: Private London collection; previously acquired on the Belgian art market; formerly in the collection of D. Bogaerts, Brussels, 1990s.
Documentation: Cleared against the Art Loss Register database and accompanied by a confirmation letter. Also accompanied by a historical report from Alessandro Neri, Cultural Heritage specialist, Florence, Italy.
