Ancient Luristan Bronze “Master of Animals” Standard Finial
Western Iran, Iron Age III, ca. 8th–7th Century BCE

A striking ancient Luristan bronze standard finial depicting the celebrated “Master of Animals” motif, one of the defining artistic symbols of Iron Age western Iran. The stylized human figure stands frontally with raised arms grasping two confronted animal forms, an image associated with strength, protection, and authority over the natural world. This openwork bronze displays the bold geometric style and expressive modeling that have made Luristan bronzes among the most sought-after works of ancient Near Eastern art.

The surface exhibits an attractive ancient green patina with areas of reddish cuprite and mineral encrustation, enhancing its authenticity and visual appeal. Comparable examples are housed in major museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where related Luristan bronze standards are dated to the 8th century BCE.
