COCLÉ POLYCHROME POTTERY ANIMAL-EFFIGY VESSEL

Zahina Phase (Early Coclé), Gran Coclé Region, Panama, ca. 200–400 AD

Height: 5 ¾ in (14.6 cm) | Diameter: 6 ¾ in (17.1 cm)

A finely modeled Zahina-phase Coclé polychrome effigy vessel depicting a stylized anthropo-zoomorphic figure. The cream-slipped face projects from the rim, with large circular eyes, a raised nose, and painted facial details in red and black. The globular body is richly decorated in red slip with bold black curvilinear and scroll motifs, integrating the creature’s limbs and symbolic elements into the vessel’s circular form. A rear handle completes the composition, a characteristic feature of early Coclé ceremonial vessels and likely related to ritual or libation use.

This vessel exemplifies the early Coclé (Zahina phase) aesthetic, known for its animated faces, strong graphic contrasts, and sophisticated polychrome painting. Works of this type were produced for elite and ceremonial contexts during the formative period of Coclé artistic development in central Panama.

Provenance: Ex. private Austin, Texas collection, acquired through family descent; originally collected in the 1960s.

Condition: Restored from multiple fragments with stabilization along the break lines and professionally executed painted touch-ups.
