Pre-Columbian Costa Rican Polychrome Pottery Effigy Urn
A large pottery effigy urn featuring a rounded body, tall neck, broadly flared rim, and pedestal base. The front depicts a human figure with almond-shaped eyes, a projecting nose, and an open mouth, framed by applied decorative bands and circular ear ornaments. Modeled arms bend inward along the sides, while small legs and feet appear on the lower front.
The reddish-orange surface is decorated with dark geometric bands accented by rows of white dots, with related painted designs continuing onto the pedestal base. The combination of sculptural detail and bold painted ornament gives the vessel a commanding presence.
Condition: Surface wear and pigment loss, scattered pale deposits, and a visible crack extending from the rim into the neck.
Height: 14 3/4”.
Provenance: Ex Kevin Martin collection, Florida; acquired at auction in Florida.
