Pre-Columbian Diquís Stone Head
Description
Pre-Columbian Diquís Stone Head
Costa Rica, ca. 800–1500 CE
Height: 3 3/4 in.
Finely carved stone head attributed to the Diquís culture of Costa Rica, featuring a stylized visage with closed, heavy-lidded eyes, a prominent nose, and a composed, introspective expression. The form is compact and sculptural, with a cylindrical lower section suggesting it was once part of a larger figure or mounted element.
The surface shows consistent weathering, mineral deposits, and age-related texture throughout, giving it a strong, authentic presence.
Diquís stone carvings are well known for their refined abstraction and ceremonial significance within the societies of southern Costa Rica.
