Pre-Columbian Maya pottery head
Description
MAYA TERRACOTTA HEAD
Guatemala, Late Classic Period, circa 600–900 A.D.
Height: 4 ¾ in (12 cm)
Modeled with refined naturalism, the head portrays a dignified male figure adorned with large circular earspools and a beaded collar. The serene facial expression, with downcast eyes and softly parted lips, conveys the calm introspection often associated with elite Maya portraiture. Subtle traces of pigment suggest that the surface was once brightly painted to enhance its lifelike presence.
This finely executed fragment likely once formed part of a larger figure or effigy vessel. Its harmonious proportions and sensitive modeling exemplify the aesthetic grace of the Late Classic Maya ceramic tradition from the Guatemalan highlands.
