Description

Pre-Columbian Maya pottery kneeling female figure, Guatemala, ca. 600–900 CE. Depicting an elegantly modeled female figure seated in a kneeling posture with hands resting upon the thighs, adorned with large circular ear ornaments, necklace, bracelets, and an elaborate segmented coiffure or headdress. The figure displays characteristic Maya facial features including elongated almond-shaped eyes and full lips, rendered in a refined sculptural manner associated with Late Classic Maya ceramic traditions.

The torso is sensitively modeled with applied ornamental details along the shoulders and jewelry, while the figure retains a rich earthen surface with mineral deposits and burial accretions throughout. Hollow-formed with vent holes, typical of Maya figural pottery from Guatemala. A strong and highly decorative example exhibiting both ceremonial regalia and elegant proportions.

Height: 7 in. (17.8 cm).

Provenance: Ex Vogt Auction Galleries, Texas; Estate of Douglas Rhodenbaugh, Austin, Texas.
