Pre-Columbian Mezcala Greenstone Figure
Description
A Pre-Columbian Mezcala greenstone figure, originating from ancient Mesoamerica, Guerrero region, Mexico, dating to the Middle to Late Formative period, circa 300–100 BC. Carved from a dense green stone, the figure is rendered in the characteristic abstract style associated with Mezcala sculpture, featuring a simplified head, minimal facial features, and a compact, columnar body with subtly indicated limbs. The restrained geometric form and smooth surfaces exemplify the aesthetic sophistication of Mezcala artisans, whose works are among the earliest expressions of abstraction in the ancient Americas. Figures of this type are believed to have held ritual or symbolic significance and are highly regarded for their sculptural purity and timeless form.
