Description
Pre-Columbian Proto-Maya Pottery Figure
El Salvador / Guatemala
Middle Preclassic, ca. 600–300 BCE
Height: 6 3/4"
A hand-modeled ceramic figure from the Proto-Maya cultural sphere of southeastern Mesoamerica, likely from the border region of El Salvador and Guatemala. Depicted seated with arms extended, the figure displays the rounded body proportions, expressive facial features, and characteristic coiffure associated with Preclassic ritual sculpture.
The surface retains mineral deposits and a well-developed burial patina. Incised body folds and modeled ear elements further emphasize the regional Proto-Maya aesthetic.
Condition: Ancient surface wear and encrustations. Restoration present on both arms, one leg, and an area along the upper back. Nose moderately worn. No additional modern repairs noted.
Provenance: Ex Auctions at Showplace, New York; Ex Private New York Collection.
