Pre-Columbian West Mexican Seated Figure
Description
Pre-Columbian West Mexican Miniature Seated Figure Fragment
Size: 1 5/8” height × 1 5/8” length
A charming Pre-Columbian West Mexican miniature seated figure, modeled in a compact, abstract style characteristic of the shaft-tomb cultures of Nayarit, Jalisco, or Colima. This example preserves the upper body and head, with the lower portion missing, giving it a sculptural, almost amuletic presence.
The figure sits with arms crossed over the torso, a classic pose seen in West Mexican ceramic figures. The head is rounded with stylized circular ear elements and a simplified facial plane. The surface retains earthen deposits and mineral patination, indicative of long-term burial.
Despite being fragmentary, the figure retains a strong sense of form and personality, making it an appealing study piece or display fragment.
