This beautifully crafted Tiahuanaco pottery vessel, dating back to 600–1000 CE, showcases the intricate artistry of one of the most influential Pre-Columbian civilizations in the Andes. The vessel features a bulbous body with gracefully curved handles and a slightly flared rim, accented by detailed polychrome decorations in earthy tones of red, orange, cream, and grey.
The vessel’s exterior is adorned with repeating geometric motifs, including zigzag patterns and interlocking shapes, symbols commonly associated with Tiahuanaco cosmology and religious beliefs. The painted designs, meticulously applied, highlight the cultural emphasis on symmetry and order. The subtle patina and wear on the surface are testaments to its antiquity and possible ceremonial use. The rounded base and sculptural details, such as the molded decorative elements on the rim, further enhance its unique aesthetic and functional qualities. 3 1/4" in height x 4 1/2" in diameter. Ex. Kumiko Cross collection, VA.
