Description

Pre-Columbian Vicús copper tupu pin from Peru, dating to ca. 100 BCE–500 CE. This elegant example features a long tapering shaft surmounted by a stylized butterfly finial with large spiral wings, a form associated with personal adornment and status display in ancient Andean society. The piece retains an attractive green and blue patina developed over centuries of burial, highlighting the intricate spiral decoration. Tupu pins were traditionally used to secure garments and often carried symbolic as well as practical functions. A fine example of Vicús metalwork with exceptional provenance.
