Description

Pre-Columbian Chancay pottery litter figure, Peru, ca. 1000–1470 CE. A rare and highly unusual example depicting a stylized anthropomorphic figure seated within a ceremonial litter or carrying platform. The rectangular form is decorated with projecting side elements, painted geometric motifs, and dark linear designs, while the front features a molded human figure with large circular eyes and a distinctive facial expression.

Litter scenes are uncommon in Chancay pottery and are believed to reference elite transport, ceremonial processions, or representations of high-status individuals. The vessel displays the characteristic cream, brown, and black painted palette associated with Chancay ceramics and retains attractive burial deposits and age-related surface wear consistent with long-term interment.

A scarce and visually striking example of Chancay figural pottery, combining sculptural and painted decoration in a form rarely encountered on the market.

Provenance: Ex Alberto Chavez Collection, Las Vegas, Nevada. Ex Private Las Vegas, Nevada Estate.
