Peru, ca. 100–800 CE
Height: 12 inches

A striking Moche pottery canchero vessel depicting a finely modeled anthropomorphic figure rising from a long cylindrical neck above a globular body. The individual wears an elaborate helmet-like headdress adorned with radiating serpent-form elements terminating in zoomorphic heads, a powerful motif associated with elite status, warfare, and the supernatural realm within Moche iconography.

The vessel exhibits the classic red-orange coloration characteristic of Moche ceramics and retains substantial burial deposits and mineral encrustation consistent with long-term interment. The expressive facial features, prominent ear ornaments, and intricate headdress remain remarkably well preserved, showcasing the exceptional sculptural skill for which Moche artisans are renowned.

Cancheros are among the most distinctive forms of Moche pottery and are believed to have been used in ceremonial and domestic contexts, often associated with the storage or serving of maize. This example combines a desirable vessel form with an impressive sculptural representation, making it an excellent addition to any collection of Pre-Columbian art.
