Ancient Byzantine Painted Oil Lamp — Samaria Origin, Original Pigment
Description
An exceptional Byzantine-period terracotta oil lamp from the Samaria region, preserved with traces of its original painted decoration. The surface shows rare surviving pigments in red and green, accentuating the molded decoration across the shoulders.
This lamp features the classic form of the late Roman–Byzantine era, with a rounded body, central fill hole, and forward wick channel. The piece shows beautiful surface patination consistent with age and use, along with natural mineral deposits and wear.
Example retaining paint are uncommon, making this a highly desirable addition for collectors of early Christian / Byzantine antiquities. The paint may have been adding during Islamic times.
