Ancient Egyptian Eye of Horus Pottery Mold
Description
Ancient Egyptian Eye of Horus Pottery Mold
Amarna Period–Late Period, Egypt
2 1/8 in. (5.4 cm)
Ancient Egyptian terracotta mold depicting the Eye of Horus (Wedjat), one of the most important protective symbols in Egyptian religion. The mold preserves the distinctive eye, cosmetic markings, and brow rendered in low relief, intended for producing small votive or decorative elements. The Eye of Horus symbolized protection, healing, royal power, and wholeness, and was widely used in amulets and religious objects throughout ancient Egypt.
This example is hand-formed from a fine reddish clay and exhibits surface wear, mineral deposits, and burial accretions consistent with age. The reverse remains plain and slightly convex. Such molds were used by artisans to create repeated decorative motifs and small cultic objects.
