Description

Ancient Greek Silver Drachm — Mausolos of Caria, Halicarnassus (c. 376–352 BC) — Ex CNG, Ex Gabriel Vandervort/Ancient Resource, California

This is an attractive silver drachm struck at Halicarnassus under Mausolos, the famous satrap of Caria and builder of the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus — one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Coins from this period are closely tied to one of antiquity’s most iconic monuments and remain highly desirable among collectors of Greek history.

The obverse features a laureate head of Apollo, finely rendered with flowing hair. The reverse shows Zeus standing left, holding a lotus-tipped scepter, with a wreath in the left field. This coin type is referenced in Konuk 21 and is a classic example of Halicarnassian coinage from the time of Mausolos.
