Item Description:
Up for auction/sale is a fine example of an ancient Levantine pottery juglet, dating to the Iron Age II (the Biblical era of the First Temple). This vessel was designed for holding high-value liquids such as olive oil or perfumed balsams.
Detailed Features:
Craftsmanship: A globular body leading to a narrow neck and an everted rim. It features a hand-applied bifid (double-strand) handle, a classic diagnostic trait for pottery of this region and period.
Decoration: The body is decorated with subtle, light-painted horizontal lines. This minimalist linear style was common in local workshops throughout the Southern Levant.
Patina: The surface displays a beautiful, authentic "desert patina" with light mineral encrustations and traces of the original clay slip.
Base: Terminating in a small, rounded "button" base.
Condition Report:
The juglet is intact and structurally sound. No repairs or restorations. There is expected surface weathering and minor earthen deposits consistent with archaeological find-sites.
Provenance:
Ex Los Angeles Estate auction, acquired from a private CA. collection. The piece was purchased from a Beverly Hills, CA. Gallery. The base features a collector’s inventory sticker ("AB.244").
