Description

Pre-Columbian Chancay Wood Staff Rattle with Anthropomorphic Faces, Peru, 1000–1450 AD
Height: 54 in. (137 cm)

Of elegant vertical form, this rare ceremonial staff rattle is finely carved from a single length of aged hardwood, the upper section surmounted by a domed finial and encircled by a vertical arrangement of four anthropomorphic faces in shallow relief, each face delineated by rectangular apertures for the eyes and mouth, pierced through the shaft to allow for resonance when used as a rattle. Beneath the faces, a band of incised geometric motifs—composed of diamonds and stylized textile-inspired patterns—encircles the staff, emphasizing its ritual significance. The surface displays a deep, timeworn patina with rich umber and sienna tones, evidence of centuries of handling and exposure.

Characteristic of the Chancay culture of the Central Coast of Peru, this object would likely have served both ceremonial and musical functions, its rattle-like qualities suggesting use in ritual procession or shamanic practice. The repetition of stylized human visages may represent ancestral or spiritual presences, underscoring the staff’s role as a conduit between worlds.
