Description

Pre-Columbian Inca Pottery Llama Head Vessel
Inca Empire, Peru, ca. 1400–1532 CE

Fine pottery vessel modeled in the form of a llama head, one of the most important animals of the Inca world. Llamas were essential for transportation, wool, food, and were frequently offered in religious ceremonies dedicated to the gods and mountain deities. This vessel features a naturalistic head with expressive eyes, modeled ears, and a flared spout, all covered in a dark burnished slip that highlights the elegant sculptural form.

Animal effigy vessels such as this were used in ceremonial and domestic contexts and reflect the Inca's close relationship with the animals that sustained their empire.

A beautiful and highly collectible example of late Pre-Columbian Inca pottery.

Provenance: Ex. Private Florida Collection. Ex. Fénix Fine Arts, Florida.
