Description

Pre-Columbian Maya Polychrome Rattle Vase
Guatemala, Late Classic Period (ca. 600–900 AD)
Height: 7 1/4 in.

A rare and evocative Maya pottery rattle vase featuring a sculptural feline head in high relief emerging from the cylindrical body. The vessel stands on a flared pedestal base and is finished in deep earthen tones with surviving red pigment throughout.

The feline head — likely representing a jaguar, an animal of immense symbolic power in Maya cosmology — displays almond-shaped eyes, a pronounced muzzle, and carefully modeled facial contours. Traces of red and cream slip remain across the surface, with strong mineral deposits and authentic age patination consistent with excavated examples from the Guatemalan Highlands region.

The body is painted with flowing red motifs that may reference stylized serpentine or abstract ceremonial imagery. When gently handled, the vessel retains its rattle function — an important ritual element associated with sound in ceremonial contexts.

Provenance:
Ex-Ivan Naser Collection, Miami, Florida
Acquired from a Private Florida Estate

A compelling example combining sculptural artistry and ritual function. Pieces of this caliber, with strong surface, intact sculptural head, and established Florida collection history, are increasingly difficult to source in today’s market.
