Pre-Columbian Maya Pottery Rattle Figure

A finely modeled Maya pottery rattle figure from the Tiquisate region of Guatemala, depicting a richly adorned standing female wearing an elaborate ridged headdress with projecting side elements, large circular earspools, a beaded necklace, and decorated shoulder ornaments. Her hands rest upon her knees in a composed, dignified pose, while the hollow body contains clay pellets that produce a gentle rattling sound when shaken.

Figures of this type served ceremonial and ritual purposes and were likely used in music, dance, or religious observances. The combination of sculptural artistry and sound reflects the importance of performance and ceremony in Classic Maya culture. The reverse features a characteristic vent slit used during firing, confirming its hollow construction.

The warm terracotta surface displays an attractive ancient patina with light earthen deposits and excellent preservation of the finely molded facial features and costume details. An exceptional example of Tiquisate ceramic artistry, combining expressive sculpture with the functional qualities of a ritual rattle.
